![]() Get used to the strafe controls especially when pointed down and with movement when following the cursor.įleet commands can be used sparingly, ships do fine with no commands. The AI will simply have better control over omni-shields, accuracy (initially) and flux management (initially). There is a lot of nuance to the combat and the fastest way to learn is via rigorous trial and error (play the game the most fun way though). The AI is good, and incredibly annoying with its missiles. While making squads like this is in no way necessary, it helps keep things organized and effective I have mine arranged in order of ship and squad size, so squad 1 is all my smallest ships for chasing or guarding other bigger ships, 2 is for my midsize vessels, 3 for support vessels like carriers, and 4+ will be for any capital class vessels I bring along. Just find and build something that's right for you and go from there.Īs for commands, using a massive fleet and ordering them all to attack one ship got me pretty far, but now I've made squads which you can select in battle with the number keys and it will then select all ships in that group for you to order you can do this by clicking on the ships you want in a squad, then while holding control, press a number key to make a squad. I like to be highly mobile, have enough fire power to defeat any enemy and most of all be face to face with my enemy, thus the Valkhazard is perfect for me and I have built it such that it can take on any other ship while being at the limit of it's flux capacitors while firing and shielded. For instance, I play with Arma Armatura as one of my mods and I fly the Valkhazard as my flagship it's a ship that's only about as big as a carrierborne corvettes, but has blistering speeds and serious firepower, it can also land on ships with hangers and resupply (the main gimmick of this mod). The best advice I can give for learning how to pilot is find a ship that suits your play style, and build it to how you play. You'll get better with practice, I've got probably hundreds of hours in starsector and I'm still not a very good pilot and an average fleet commander. That way you can see the tactics, decision making, positioning, and strategies they use. And if you're having trouble putting theory into practice, just do what I did starting out and watch someone do a "let's play". I love this game, and I've put maybe 80 ish hours into it and I'm absolutely still figuring it out. And that essentially means you end up either losing or spending even more on repairs than the ship is worth. You won't have allies to hide behind so you can vent flux safely and with a constant buildup you pretty much guarantee that your shields will drop and you will take damage. Its fun having a big ship like the Paragon and being a force on the field to worry about, but if you separate from your friends and get surrounded even by relatively smaller ships, you can easily and quickly find yourself getting overwhelmed. They work better together and they are more effective in combat. However, if you're making the choice between selling 3 frigates for 1 destroyer and only having thst as your combat ship, I'd say you're better off with the frigates. If you don't feel comfortable piloting the best ship in your fleet you can always let AI do it and support them. Obviously the destroyer has better armaments so early on getting that as your flagship is a good idea. I think some of the best beginner friendly ships are the Wolf Class Frigate, and the Hammerhead class destroyer. Fleet composition can be more important than any singular ship.Įxpanding on above, having the right ships, set up properly and managing the d-mods is all part of setting up your fleet. And the best part is that if you manage the weapons you can synergies really well and essentially set up groups that fight well together.Ģ. By using mixed weapons across ships (kinetic, explosive and energy) you can destroy enemy fleets. Pick your fights and learn who you can take.įor example, 3 decently outfitted Wolf Class frigates can take a relatively larger force of pirates dealing with d-mods. Im pretty new to combat but I'm coming to grips with it and this is what I found:
